Life on board during the Discoveries: the real daily life
Life on board Discoveries reveals the daily reality of sailors, marked by hardship, routine and constant risks.

This year, World of Discoveries is nominated in the category Best Weekend Activity – Porto.
Some stories are told in books. Others are lived. And that’s what we see every day: children arriving full of questions, parents letting themselves be surprised, and grandparents rediscovering narratives they thought were neatly “stored away” in memory. When History is experienced as a family, it doesn’t end at the visit, it continues in the conversations, the questions, and the connections that follow.
At World of Discoveries, the experience was designed to be participatory. Children aren’t just visitors: they explore, observe, experiment, and connect Portugal to the world in a simple, engaging way.
And there’s a detail we hear again and again: often, adults leave feeling they’ve learned too, because when History is shared, it feels closer.
The Pumpkin Awards are described as Portugal’s “Oscars” for families, with a clear purpose: to recognise those who create great family moments and help make daily life lighter and more special.
Being nominated for Best Weekend Activity – Porto reinforces what we want to keep doing: creating educational and emotional experiences that stay with you, not because of spectacle, but because of what you take home.
This is our motto, and it truly is the essential point: Help us take Portugal’s History further. More families. More children. More visits that spark curiosity and become shared memories.
Voting for the Pumpkin Awards runs from 12 to 20 March 2026. If you’ve visited World of Discoveries, or if you believe in bringing children closer to History, you can support us by voting for World of Discoveries in Best Weekend Activity – Porto on the official Pumpkin Awards voting page.

National Historic Centres Day in Porto (March, 28th) is a chance to rediscover the city’s UNESCO-listed Historic Centre as living heritage. World of Discoveries joins with a guided visit that connects Porto, the riverfront and the human side of the Discoveries.

Carnival at World of Discoveries arrived with “Legends and Masks”, filling the Museum with colour, creativity and family-friendly energy. With theatrical moments, special décor and mask activities, each visit became participatory and memorable.
