Miragaia: The Historic Neighbourhood of World of Discoveries

Even today, walking through its narrow streets means discovering colourful façades, stairways, small squares and traces of the medieval city, in an atmosphere very different from the pace of central Porto.

What to visit in Miragaia

Church of São Pedro de Miragaia

Start with the Church of São Pedro de Miragaia, one of the oldest in the city.

Inside, the highlights include the gilded woodwork of the main chapel and a valuable Flemish triptych dedicated to Pentecost. It is a brief visit, but a very interesting one for anyone who appreciates historical and artistic heritage.

Cais de Miragaia

A few steps away is Cais de Miragaia, perfect for a walk along the Douro.

Few people imagine that this area was once known as Praia de Miragaia. Historical documents preserved by the Municipal Archive show how this riverbank was gradually transformed over the centuries into the quay we know today.

More than a monument, it is the whole setting that deserves attention: the riverside façades, balconies, arches and houses rising up the hillside tell part of Porto’s history on their own.

Escadas do Caminho Novo and the Fernandine Wall

For those who enjoy exploring the city on foot, it is worth climbing up or down the Escadas do Caminho Novo.

Here you will find one of the main preserved sections of the Fernandine Wall, built in the 14th century to protect the city. Between the wall, the steps and the views over the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia, this is one of Miragaia’s most surprising areas.

Palácio das Sereias

Also known as Palácio da Bandeirinha, this 18th-century building immediately draws attention because of the two mermaids flanking its main portal.

Although it now serves another purpose, it is worth observing the façade and learning one of the building’s historical curiosities: the owning family abandoned the palace during the French Invasions in 1809.

Alfândega Nova do Porto

Continuing along the waterfront, you reach Alfândega Nova do Porto.

Built in the 19th century based on Colson’s plan, Alfândega Nova was restored from 1992 onwards under the guidance of architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. Today, the building houses the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre, dedicated to conferences, exhibitions and cultural events, as well as the Museum of Transport and Communications. Among its exhibitions is Metamorphosis of a Place: Customs Museum, which allows visitors to discover the history of customs and its relationship with the city of Porto. It is an excellent continuation of a visit to World of Discoveries, creating a natural link between Portuguese maritime journeys and Porto’s commercial development.

Palácio de Cristal Gardens

If you still have time, end the route at the Palácio de Cristal Gardens.

After the climb, you will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful viewpoints, overlooking the Douro, Arrábida Bridge, the Alfândega and the Vila Nova de Gaia riverbank.

It is the perfect ending to a day devoted to discovery.
